WiMax vs LTE

royalty.jpgSuper high speed cellular wireless is coming eventually.  There are 2 competing technologies being worked on right now, WiMax and Long Term Evolution.  WiMax, championed by Sprint and Intel, is already in testing in select markets.  Long Term Evolution is not yet, but a recent financial development may give LTE a leg up.  LTE is being pushed by a consortium of hardware manufactures, including Avaya, NEC, Nokia, and Ericsson.  The consortium has agreed to limit royalty fees on their intellectual property in an effort to advance the LTE technology.   This is an interesting strategy, but focusing on the financial aspects of a developing technology, rather then the on the technical merits, may be a losing strategy in the end.
