There is a lot of family friendly content on the Internet, but there is also a LOT of decidedly adult content and it’s very hard to keep such content from getting to children. A new bill in Congress aims to fix that. Dubbed the Wireless Internet Nationwide for Families Act, the prospective law calls for the FCC to auction off the 2155-2175MHz band of spectrum in order to create a free, wireless broadband network geared toward families.
The winner of the auction would be required to use the spectrum to create free, nationwide wireless internet service that blocks all pornographic websites.
The bills sponsor, Rep. Anna G. Eshoo (D-CA) said "The cost of broadband service is a barrier for too many families who want broadband, with more than 100 million Americans without broadband at home."
It is not clear how any company could profit from a free service, but it would most likely have to be advertising driven. I think that there would be great demand for the family friendly part, but requiring the service be free seems to be dooming the endeavor from the start.
