The first time you plug in the adapter you have to register with MagicJack.  During the registration process you select a phone number, or at least you select the area code and exchange you want to you.  You have your choice of hundreds of area codes from around the country.  The exchange list isn’t as robust, but you can get an exchange that’s reasonable close to where you live.  You can also select a phone number in some other part of the county.   You can select an area code regardless of where you actually live or where you plan on using the MagicJack.
