Free cell phone wireless Internet Service
wap.jpgI found out recently that the $5 a month I am paying to Verizon Wireless for Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) Internet access is actually for the use of their WAP proxy server.  There are several free WAP proxy services that you can use or you can even set up your own, which is what I did.

Setting this up requires “hacking” info your cell phone and changing some settings.  Most newer cell phones have secret “access” codes that can be dialed to access “hidden” menus where you can make the changes needed to get WAP Internet access without paying for it.  A quick search for hack and your cell phone model number on google should give you the needed information.

You can also search for free WAP proxy and get detailed instructions on how to set this up for yourself.  I got it set up on my cell phone less then an hour.

One word of caution, “hacking” into your cell phone is not for the novice.  You need to be comfortable dealing with IP addresses, DNS, and ports.  You can easily “brick” your phone making it useless or at least unable to get Internet access.
