The good news for DSL just keeps rolling in. RIM Semiconductor had announced a new DSL technology that can offer speeds of up to 40 MB/s. That would be faster then cable or even fiber optic Internet access. DSL speeds are dependant on your distance from your service provider’s office. RIM Semiconductor’s new DSL technology will work at distances of up to 5,500 feet. That should be far enough for most people in urban environments.
The new technology features a major change in how the underlying DSL technology works. Without getting into hard core technical details, part of RIM’s new technology involves changing how upload and download bandwidths are allocated. Currently, up and down load portions are dedicated, so when you are downloading a video, the upload portion of your DSL connection is idle. RIM’s technology will allow that currently unused portion to be used for whichever direction needs it, but if needed that portion can “turn around” in milliseconds.
