The Senate has passed a bill that mandates that VoIP telephone service providers, including cable companies, can deliver 911 service to their customers. A similar bill passed in the House last fall. It should not be difficult to reconcile the two bills so it can be sent to the President.
Supporters of the bill say "when consumers dial 911 for emergency service, they should do so with confidence that their calls for help will be answered without regard to who provides their phone service or what technology they employ."
