If you’re wondering why you haven’t gotten that email you were waiting for, BlackBerry maker Research in Motion is experiencing a major outage of its BlackBerry wireless email service, its second nationwide outage in the last year.
RIM notified its customers of the problem around 3:30 eastern time today, saying that the outage was affecting about half of North American customers, regardless of carrier. RIM did not say when the problem would be resolved.
RIM said the cause of the outage was "to be determined." It follows a similar outage in April 2007, which was caused by an faulty software update at the company's main data center that handles BlackBerry email traffic for millions of users across the US and Canada.
The Blackberry outage comes just days after huge parts of Asia lost all Internet access due to several undersea fiber optic cable failures. Now is probably a good time to do that hard drive back up you've been putting off.
