Another Undersea Cable is Cut

Another undersea fiber optic cable has been damaged.  This cable, located in fiber.jpgthe Persian Gulf off the coast of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, makes 3 undersea fiber optic cables that have been cut this week.  The other 2 cables are in the Mediterranean Sea.  This newest cable break is causing severe phone line disruptions and compounding the already existing Internet outage the Middle East, parts of Asia and India.

All three cables are owned by British based FLAG telecom.  FLAG Telecom is saying that repair ships will not arrive at the cable breaks for another few days and repairs could take a week after that.  Rerouting of traffic has helped somewhat, but it has restored not full or even acceptable service to many countries.

 

Exact details on what caused the cable damage won’t be known until robotic submersibles inspect the damage.  The 2 cables in the Mediterranean are thought to have been cut at the same time by a ship’s anchor.   There is no suspected cause of the third cable break at this time.
