A 3rd type of VoIP phone company allows you to bring your own device. These carriers include Broadvoice and Callcentric. This way you can decide what SIP adapter you want to use. Bringing your own device (BYOD) is often less expensive then getting a preconfigured router. You can also use the same SIP adapter to connect to more then 1 SIP provider and to your office PBX.
However, BYOD is not for the novice. Setting up the SIP adapters is a challenge for even an experience computer professional. This is even more so when connecting to your office PBX.
Over the past few months, I set up several SIP adapters to connect to my office PBX. The initial set up ranged from frustrating to downright agonizing. I rotated device every few days and tried to gauge the differences in call quality. All the units I tested had several things in common. 1st they all had 2 ports. This allowed me to set up 1 port to connect to a VoIP carrier and the 2nd port to my office PBX. This is something you can’t do with a preconfigured adapter.
