AT&T offers free wi-fi access so some if its customers

Telecommunications behemoth, AT&T, its giving high-speed internet subscribers free wireless internet access at 10,000+ Wi-Fi hotspots across

America

. AT&T has about 14 million high speed internet customers mostly using its DSL service.

This new perk, which AT&T says could save $240 per year for some users, is especially geared toward AT&T customers with smart phone devices, such as the popular Apple iPhone. The company hopes to steer millions of smart phone users across

America

towards its DSL broadband services. For years, DSL has lost market share to cable internet access and more recently to Verizon’s fiber optic FiOS service. AT&T sees this new feature as a way to help stem the tide of losses to the other services.

More than one-third of

U.S.

internet users have accessed the internet over a wireless connection at home, work, or public locations, demonstrating a strong demand for on-the-go Wi-Fi connections.

Most Wi-Fi hotspots, in restaurants, airports and other public places, charge daily or monthly fees for access, though many are free in places like McDonalds and Starbucks.

AT&T wireless customers who use Apple’s iPhone currently must get a Wi-Fi package to use their iPhone at AT&T hotspots, but they now can use their iPhones at hotspots for free if they are AT&T broadband Internet subscribers.
