Open Source Wireless Network Becomes Reality

Last week Verizon Wireless made a surprise announcement that it would be ending it’s “walled garden” approach to the handsets it lets work on it’s network.  In an industry first, Verizon said it would allow any CDMA compatible phone to work on it’s cellular network.  The change was expected to go into affect in a year.

Now AT&T Wireless has decided to one up its biggest competitor.  AT&T will open up their wireless network to any GSM compatible device immediately.

“You can use any handset on our network you want,” said the CEO of AT&T’s wireless unit, Ralph de la Vega. “We don’t prohibit it, or even police it.”

Since Internet giant Google announced it’s intention to create an open source wireless network the “walls” around the cellular garden have come tumbling down..

“We are the most open wireless company in the industry,” de la Vega boasted, claiming that AT&T has implemented today what Google and other carriers have promised to bring to the wireless market a year from now.
