Calls from one Skype user to another (computer to computer calls) are free, regardless of where the two computers are located. Calls to a landline or cell phone run are $.021 per minute for calls in the USA and Canada or you can subscribe to a calling plan for $30 per year (that’s right per year, not per month) for “unlimited calling”. Skype defines unlimited calling at 3000 minutes per month. If you use more then that, Skype can disconnect your service.
If you want to receive calls via Skype you have to buy a phone number from them. It costs $60 per year, but you can get a local number in dozens of US area codes or Australia, Brazil, Hong Kong, New Zealand or 15 other countries. So your mom in Estonia could you in Chile and only pay for a local call.
Now while using Skype can make calling, espcially international calling, very cheap, you have to use your computer with a headset or speakers and a microphone to make calls. This isn’t always very convenient. Now there are other options.
