When deploying voice of internet protocol (VoIP) phones in a remote location call quality should be your highest priority. The first thing you can do to ensure the highest call quality is use a dedicated internet connection on both sides of the voice network. Using an internet connection that is shared with your computer network can lead to echoes, latency, sound loss, and dropped calls. Even if you have significant bandwidth, a single computer downloading a large file or sending an email with a big attachment can cause problems with voice traffic.
In instances where a dedicated internet connection is not possible, such as for a home telecommuter, using a router with Quality of Server (QoS) features is vital. QoS can prioritize voice traffic so surges in internet usage do not cause voice quality degradation.
If possible, setting up a hardware Virtual Private Network (VPN) with QoS can help in shared connection environments. The VPN also makes port forwarding unnecessary.
