I recently switch my TV and Internet service from Cablevision to Verizon Fios. In order to use Fios TV you must use a special router that feeds the “guide” to your set top box, as well as on demand and other advanced features. The set top boxes each get an IP address from the Verizon router.
Now, I have my own router which is a VPN router that I use to connect to my office telephone system for a couple of VoIP phones. Verizon told me that I has to use their router and would have to sacrifice my VPN.
When Verizon came to do the Fios installation I asked the technician if I could use the Verizon router behind my existing router. He had never heard of doing that and had no idea if it would work.
Once everything was set up and working I just had to change the IP address of the Verizon router, as the default was the same 192.168.0.1 as my existing router. Once I did that and rebooted the router and the set top boxes I was able to use my VPN router in front of the Verizon router. I also turned off the wireless functionality on the Verizon router to make sure I didn’t have 2 802.11g routers transmitting and interfering with each other.
