20006 Gartner Report

For the 2nd year in a row, http://www.gartner.com/, has ranked NEC as the biggest selling brand in global telephony extension line shipments. In it’s recently release 2006 report, Enterprise Telephone Equipment, Worldwide, NEC shipped over 7 million units representing an 11.6% market share. NEC beat out telephony industry heavyweights Avaya, Nortel, Siemens, Alcatel, Cisco, Panasonic, and Ericsson. Avaya came in 2^nd place with 6.1 million units.

Overall, the worldwide telephony market expanded by 7.4% in 2006 after a pedestrian increase of only 2.1% in 2005. While IP telephony has made huge strides, increasing by a robust 44%, TMD hardware still represented 75% of the market in 2006.

The telephony market is fairly split between small-midsize businesses, defined as under 400 employees, and large enterprise businesses. The small-midsize businesses market accounted for 60% of the 2006 shipments, however, the enterprise market dominates in the IP line shipments segment. While small-midsize businesses are deploying IP solutions in ever increasing numbers, bandwidth, cost, quality of service issues, and IT support staff constraints have kept TDM the technology of choice for most smaller firms.
